Pre-Investigation Research
Good idea, or bad?
This is one of those subjects that no matter which way I go, there will be some disagreement. That’s okay, healthy discussion is always welcome
My personal issue with researching ahead of time is that there is a chance that your investigation might be skewed. For example, the background history is that an 8 year old girl was murdered with a hammer in the basement by the gardener. Come investigation time, you go down in the basement and start your investigation.
Typical questions in this scenario might be ‘Are you the girl who was murdered here?’ or ‘Are you the gardener who murdered the little girl here?’. You might find a hammer to use as a trigger object.
If you get any kind of response, you might be inclined to assume it is either the little girl or the gardner when in fact, it might be the spirit of the little girl’s brother. Any conclusions that you might come up with could easily be incorrect.
If you go in blind and you are doing an EVP session and you get back EVPs that refer to a gardener, or killed with hammer, now you have great evidence that directly substantiates the history or stories and you can more directly have a better idea of who you were speaking with.
What we do is, I will typically do all of the research ahead of time on the history and stories, and Gina goes in ‘blind’. As the investigations progress, if she starts getting evidence that corroborates the stories, then I will let her know that part so she can try to pursue that direction of inquiry.
Kinect SLS Camera Issues
Know your equipment
If you are using the FAAST viewer with your Kinect sensor, there is a setting that you need to be aware of. The options are OpenNI Microsoft Microsoft-V2 If you choose the OpenNI option, there is a huge possibility that you will get false readings. It seems that when the sensor sees a rectangular object like a doorway, it thinks there is a body there so it displays the skeleton. It will even look like the skeleton is moving. Go ahead, try it out. Find some rectangular shapes, let the sensor try to focus for a bit. If you are getting false reads, change it to ‘Microsoft’.
Spirit Radio
And why I do not like it
These typically work by cycling through a series of FM radio stations at relatively quick intervals around 1/2 second per frequency. What you end up with is 1/2 second sound clips. If one of those sound clips is of a radio DJ speaking, it can be falsely interpreted as a spirit speaking. If spirits can speak using FM frequencies, you should be able to take any FM radio and dial in a ‘dead space’ and they should be able to talk to you. Best of luck
Investigating in The Dark
Personally, I don’t like to investigate in complete darkness. i don’t see the value in it. Yes, in the dark your senses might be heightened but so is your imagination. I guess it does make for good spooky TV shows. If you are investigating shadow figures, you won’t be able to see them in the dark. Your video evidence will typicallly be of lower quality. I have never heard of a theory that spirits are only active when it is dark. I do understand why people investigate at night. There is less activity in the area and less noise pollution that could distract. It would be very easy to miss some sounds. On my next investigation, I am going to try an experiment. i will have an investigator do a session in complete darkness for about 15 minutes. Then I will turn soft lights on and do another session for 15 minutes. I am curious to see if and how they perceive things differently
